This time, I'm going to do it. This time I am actually going to finish a "read the whole Bible in X number of days" reading plan! Why is this time going to be different you ask? Because I stretched it out from 1 year, to 2 YEARS!
If you were to ask my wife "Does Kyle like to read?" she would laugh, say "no" and then laugh some more. I absolutely HATE reading. I'm slow at it, and I don't have the attention span to read more than a few pages at a time. So I was ecstatic when I found out that YouVersion (the company that made the Bible App on my iPhone) has the ability to completely customize the length of the reading plans! Huzzah! Now I get 2 days to complete what a normal person is able to do in 1 day!
Am I lowering the bar for me? Yes... But will it get results? ABSOLUTELY!
I say "absolutely" because I haven't even gotten through 3 verses and the Lord has spoken to me so much that I wanted to write a blog post about it!
This reading plan began in Genesis 1 (as many do). Anytime I've ever just opened my Bible to read, I've never ended up in Genesis... Why? Because just like every other book I've tried to read, I've read the beginning hundreds of times already! Why do I need to read it again? With other books that excuse may work, but with the Bible you can't read ANYTHING too many times!
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. 3 Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
When I was a kid, my granddad would take us fishing out on the lake. I used to be mesmerized by the water and how it could look so rough from a distance, but up close, as we would pass over the waves, they were so smooth and formless. It blew my mind that God could create something so different from anything else in the world. So when I read verse 2 saying "The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters." I know EXACTLY what God was thinking. "Wow, look at this stuff... you can feel it, but you can't really hold on to it... that's cool! Hmmm... I wonder if I can make it look cooler?"
BAM! Verse 3 happens. "Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light."
Have you ever seen how light is affected by water? The reflections, the refractions, the colors? The Bible then says in verse 4 "And God saw that the light was good." I'd like to interpret that as God thinking, "Oh yeah... I'm the man. That is soooo sweet lookin'!"
That alone is enough to make me a believer!
How awesome is our God?
Very Awesome, Kyle! (Yes, I know, that was more of a rhetorical question haha) I was impressed by your post, it gave me a new perspective :) Thanks!
